Yes, I have to agree, that is not the prettiest bustle. But it could be better if the sides of the points were tucked under with more grace.  I do like your idea of trying a French bustle. The French usually compliments a lace-up bodice better and the placement of the lace decoration on your train is placed so that a French bustle will show it off nicely.
